Along with New York icons such as Andy Warhol, Kenny Scharf, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Haring proliferated in the realm of pop-art of the 1980's. In fact, his work is considered by many to be emblematic of popular culture of the 80's in general. During his brief but impact-filled career, Haring managed to create not only a huge and diverse body of work, but a huge international following as well. His tragic death from AIDS in early 1990 was a tragedy to the art world, but was also an eye-opener for society about the harsh reality of the HIV virus.
